Semester Courses "German as a Foreign and Second Language"
Depending upon the availability of course places, all persons over the age of 17 are admitted.
- All students must enroll by the specific enrollment deadline
- Course fees and additional costs must be paid in full by the specific enrollment deadline
- All first time enrollments only must do a placement test at the beginning of the semester.
Course Aims
The university course "German as a Foreign and Second Language" offers German classes for students of non german speaking backgrounds, enabling them to acquire German to the standad levels described in the Course Aim Regulation of the European Council and the European Language Portfolio.
Placement Test and Language Level
In one semester only one general language course can be attended. Additionally, you can also attend special courses. Course participants are placed in the appropriate class (according to their language level) by way of a placement test at the beginning of the semester. The placement test takes place before the first week of the semester (winter semester: last week of September; summer semester: last week of February).
Course grouping finalization can only be made after the placement tests. It might be, that the actual course level could be higher or lower than expected. Course #3 for instance could be at Breakthrough Level or Intermediate Level. In any case we do inform the course participants what language level the course aims at.

Proficiency Control and Grading Procedures
The knowledge of vocabulary and grammar is assessed directly in the three lower levels. In the three upper levels this examination is integrated into the assessment of language skills.
Grading Scale : 1 Excellent - 2 Good - 3 Satisfactory - 4 Passed - 5 Failed.
Attendance and Course Certificates
Only course participants who have not missed more than three sessions (in the General Language Courses) respectively one session (in the optional courses) and regularly participated in class are entitled to a course certificate at the end of the course. Otherwise, an confirmation of attendance for the sessions attended will be issued only.
Failure
If participants fail a course, they can only advance to the next level if:
- they pass a revision test of the level they failed before beginning the next level
- they provide other sufficient proof of their language skills.
Changing Classes/Course Interruption
- Changing classes: within the first week after the beginning of course (in accordance with the course management only).
- Course interruption: in the case of course interruption, no course fees are refunded.
